-start "Kante is an application that let's you connect objects on your desktop. I'll give you a little demo, so let's just start Kante." - double-click Kante icon, application opens "This is the user interface of Kante. On the left, you see the interface that actually let's you connect any object you like. You will always connect a subject to an object, using some predicate - if you know RDF, this should seem very familiar to you." - mouse pointer moves over to the right window, successively selects the entries in the table "On the right you can see a list of connections that have already been made. So, for example, I can see that the 'knud und berit wm' image depicts the person Knud. Or that another image was made by a person Benjamin Nowack, that Knud attends the SWUI workshop, and that Eyal is the maker, or author, of a paper on ActiveRDF." - double clicks a few items ("knud und berit wm.jpg" and "SWUI Workshop") "From this table, I can also double click the objects, and they will be opened in an appropriate application. For example, I can open this picture... or I can open this event, which will show up in my calendar." - selects first entry again, moves mouse over to left "So, now I'll show you how to make connections. It's really very easy. If you look at this picture again, you'll notice that it has two people in it - Knud and Berit - but at the moment we only have one statement, saying that the picture depicts Knuds. I would like make another connection, saying that it depicts Berit as well. To connect the picture to Berit, I leave the subject as it is, and just change the object. One way of doing this is just to type something in the object text field and let Kante suggest me some objects." - types "berit", get's list "So I type 'berit' ... and get a long list of suggestions, which all match that keyword. I select the address book entry for Berit, because I think that best represents her." - clicks "connect" "And then I just click 'connect' and the new connection shows oup on the left." - types "knud", clears the other fiels "Now I want to say that Knud knows Siegfried. So I type 'knud' and select the address book entry from the list... I change the predicate ... and now I can also use drag&drop to get objects into Kante. For example, I can open the Address Book and drag Siggi's entry onto Kante." - clicks "connect" "And again I click 'connect', and there we have our new connection." - clears the text fields "One other thing I want to show you, is that you can of course also connect to objects we downloaded with 'Knoten' earlier. For example, I want to say that Eyal is the maker of the ActiveRDF project." - selects Eyal in Address Book, drags him into Kante "I select Eyal in the Address Book ... drag him into Kante..." - types predicate and 'active' "I fill in the predicate and the keyword 'active' for the object. Down in the list I see an entry called 'ResourceNode: ActiveRDF", which is the one I want." - opens Spotlight search window "The last thing I want to show, is that the connections made with Kante are also indexed by Spotlight, which is the Search index on the Mac. I open the Spotlight search window and type 'depicts berit', and voila, as the result I get the picture I earlier connected to Berit."
